Helmets For Riding 4 Wheelers

4 Wheeler Racing

An ATV is a very powerful machine. The first four-wheelers were engineered for utility uses such as pulling tractors out ditches in the middle of a snowstorm or taking lumber workers deep into the woods to do their jobs. But in the last couple of decades, the use of ATVs for recreational purposes has really taken off. And perhaps one of the most exciting sports to grow up around four-wheelers is that of ATV racing. It is a sport that is easy to get hooked on either as a participant or as a spectator.

Much of the reason for the popularity of off road racing is also the reasons don't want their youngsters involved in the thrilling hobby. There is just no getting around the fact that racing four-wheelers is a dangerous passion to have. Even an amateur ATV race will, by the very nature of the sport take the four-wheeler and its driver over rough terrain that could include ravines, rocks, fallen trees and just about anything else you might find in nature.

It is one thing to take an ATV out for a recreational tour of the wilderness. It is dangerous enough when you have the liberty to go slow, turn back or get out and clear the route before you take your four-wheeler over that terrain. In a racing situation, you are pushing that ATV to its speed limits and the driver will commonly charge right into unfamiliar terrain that may have hidden dangers because of the need to move quickly to win the race.

When you are watching a race on television, seeing a crash is exciting because when that vehicle goes flying, as do the bodies of the drivers and passengers, those are not people you know. But most four-wheeler races are local pitting daredevils from the same community against each other in a test of man and machine against each other and against rough terrain. It is not so thrilling to see "wipe outs" in that situation when it is your friends or family out there facing potentially serious injury or even death.

That is why safety is a top criteria for any ATV race. A four-wheeler race is not the kind of sport to get into if you are not prepared to conform to very strict standards of preparation and safety. Every possible form of body protection must be employed to give each driver and rider maximum protection should there be an accident. This includes helmets, gloves and body armor. This is no sport for the "hot shot" who feels they should not have to wear a helmet. The chances of accidents is high so whoever is running the race must make this rule the law of the land.

Then when racing, even though you are competing against each other, each and every driver or rider in the competing ATVs must look after each other. You want to win the race but for each of your competitors to come through unharmed. By racing responsibly, making sure there is room to move for all drivers and even stopping if there is an accident to render aid, you are being responsible in how you handle your ATV racing. These precautions won't make four-wheeler racing completely safe but they can go along way to make sure racing is about fun and not life threatening danger.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How can I get my neighbors to stop riding their 4-wheelers in the city limits?
These are the facts of my situation. That's the best way I know to tell it.
    1. Our neighbors got upset with us last summer because we didn't want them riding their very loud 4-wheelers on our property. We feel this way because my husband did a funeral for a 10 year old boy that was killed on a 4-wheeler. And 9 times out of 10 the kids you see on 4-wheelers aren't wearing helmets.
2.This spring our neighbors have decided to build a 4-wheel track around their property which is right up against ours.
    3. These 4-wheelers are ridiculously loud and they are forever gunning them.
    4. The father has a reputation for being a donkey's rearend so I know it would do no good to talk to him.
    5. What legal rights does one have concerning a situation like this. The noise is so loud you can't sit out on your back porch and talk.

    • ANSWER:
Call your police dept (not 911) and ask if there are any code violations that they are doing. Or just complain about the noise to the cops.

  2. QUESTION:
Why do people let their nine year-olds ride 4-wheelers?
I pay accident claims for an insurance company. This man let his nine year-old son ride a four-wheeler by himself and he crashed it into a tree. He was in the ICU for a week with traumatic abdominal injuries. He had a hernia, fractures, but thank God no serious head injuries even though he wasn't wearing a helmet.
What was this guy thinking? Do people usually let such young kids do that?
He was riding in the woods, not in the yard.

    • ANSWER:
Well, some people take it as a "live a little" moment. Or, maybe this kid has done it many many times before, and this was a freak accident.

Personally, I was riding four wheelers at 5, but my father always rode with me until 15. After that, I was told to stay within view of the house. Now that you mention it, I think I'm giulty of never wearing a helmet when doing so...A lot of people let young kids ride four wheelers... some are under supervision, but unfortunately, many are like the child you described here. I don't know what some people are thinking... they just don't have foresight.

GLAD to hear this kid wasn't too hurt, Hopefully the father took this lesson to heart.

  3. QUESTION:
Children and four wheelers. What are your thoughts?
My son is 13 months old. He goes to his fathers every other weekend. Today, I asked how the day went and was told about a 4 wheeler ride. (no helmet)
I am very uneasy about a 13 month old on a 4 wheeler. He said they only rode in the yard - but I still don't like the idea. I know they are careful, but how many careful parents accidentally hurt their children every year due to accidents.
I realize I can't control what happens at his fathers home, but what do you think. Should I request rides be stopped until he is older and 'knows' how to fall? Am I being crazy overprotective?

Sry for the repost, looking for more answers before I talk to my ex about this.

    • ANSWER:
sit down with the child's father & discuss your concerns (without emotion). buy a helmet for the child to use at his father's home.

  4. QUESTION:
Am i allowed to ride my 4 wheeler to school?
I know this may be kind of a stupid question but, is it against like school rules if you ride a 4wheeler or mini bike there? Even if you have a helmet? And even if you had a chain or whatever to lock it up? I just wanted to know for future references.

    • ANSWER:
4 wheelers are not street legal. Therefore they are illegal at school.
Your state DMV will confirm this answer.

  5. QUESTION:
How or where can I find out if there is an ATV helmet law in my county/state?
I live in Troup County, Georgia, and inside city limits of Hogansville. An officer told me today that my 12 year old could not ride the 4 wheeler without a helmet. He said it is a law. I understand that for safety reasons it should be worn, but I don't believe that it is a law. How can I find out if it is?

    • ANSWER:
Go to lawresearch .com they have the Georgia state statutes, but beware it might be a city ordinance violation that could cost you a fine even if it is not a violation of state law, i would suggest calling the local city hall if you think the officer is misleading you and speak with a clerk, they have access to all of the ordinances and state statutes.~

  6. QUESTION:
Would you allow your two year old to ride on a 4 wheeler
Obviously with a parent. But my husband just bought a 4 wheeler and he wants to take our two year old for a ride out at his parents' house (they own about ten acres of land). I'm a little skeptical, but if he wore a helmet and had some way to secure him I would be ok with it. What do you think? Would he be ok riding with my husband (slowly) as long as he had a helmet on and some way to secure him to my husband to keep him from falling?

Our two year old is dying to go for a ride but I refuse to let him ride without a helmet or safety belt of some kind! :)
Amanda: There's a nice riding trail out there that is flat across an open field with trees and a pond. I think he's enjoy it :) Thank you for your answer.
littlejohnsgirl: I don't mean to secure him to the vehicle, but to his father. I don't think I'd want him tied down to the 4 wheeler, lol. Thanks for your answer though.
Chattymom: Thank you Miss High and Mighty :)

    • ANSWER:
Your son should be perfectly safe as long as he knows how to follow directions and is good about doing so.

However, please do not secure him to the 4-wheeler. Any motorized vehicle without a ROPS does not have seat belts for a very good reason. IF the 4-wheeler should roll, you WANT your son to be thrown by the momentum so hopefully it will not land on him. If he's secured to the vehicle and there are no ROPS then there is nothing to protect his head/neck/body from being crushed when the 4-wheeler rolls.

Please please please do not secure him to the ATV if you choose to let him ride.

ROPS=Roll Over Protection System or Roll Over Protective Structure. Think of a farm tractor...those with cabs have a "safe zone" created by the cab, and therefore have a seatbelt. If the tractor rolls, the operator will be held by the belt within the safe zone so that the tractor will not land on him/her. Those without safe zones come without seat belts so that operators will be thrown and minimize their chances of being caught/pinned under the equipment should there be a roll over.

  7. QUESTION:
What are the laws about 4-wheelers and children?
He rides in the yard and the field behind the yard (lots of land, he wont stray out of there). He wears a helmet and safety glasses. He's 9, weighs... I dont even know (how bad a parent am I?) Live in Mass. We recently came into a 4-wheeler. I know there was a lot of talk about changing the laws so that kids couldn't ride them anymore. I didn't pay attention because it had nothing to do with me. Now I need to know and can't find any useful google results. Did the law change? What is it? Are previously purchased 4-wheelers grandfathered in? (They're made especially for kids and cost a mint.)

Wow. Nuff said. Thanks Bosox. Others need not apply.
You know what luvmyhubby, I just love the prestine godsend mothers like you. How dare you judge a person based on a question they posted. You're real tough on here with your waving finger aren't you? Ever consider I might've posted this question FOR THE VERY REASON that I'm concerned for his safety? Get the hell out of my post.
Excuse me, I shouldn't have posted that while emotional about it. I took that very personally, and should've counted to 10 like Mom always taught me, rolled my eyes and forgotten about it.

    • ANSWER:
Did you hear about the boy in Plymouth last year? He was 8 years old and riding on a 4 - wheeler with his friend. It flipped over, pinning the boy down. Sadly, he didn't survive. I wouldn't take the risk.
But in case that doesn't do it for you, here's an outline of the Massachusetts laws regarding ATV use. http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/dle/atvsafety.htm
Note the last line: "Under no circumstances, may a person operate who is less than 10 years of age."

*ETA* The fact that you took the time to ask this question shows that you're concerned about your son's safety. Don't let anyone imply that you aren't concerned about your child.

  8. QUESTION:
Guys I need help pleassse :) ! What do i get my bf for his birthday ?
Soooo..okay he is gonna be turning 16 in about 5 weeks. And he will not tell me what he wants for his birthday. He said he doesn't want anything all he wants is me. But the visor is gone. Umm.. I just have no clue what to get himm. He likes the necklaces at aeropostale..but I am just blank. He has everything under the sun soo Idk. I need help guysss..what do you thinkk???? -Kate :)

    • ANSWER:
My best advice for gifts is to go with luxury over functionality.
By luxury, I do not mean a luxury item or price. I mean an item that is not needed or required at the moment.

For instance, if I got a helmet for my birthday I'd be like eeeh thx. Why, because I already have one for sure, since I am prohibited to ride and not have one.
If I really needed a new one, I would have bought it before, because it is an item I require.

Of course, it all depends on your budget and how much you're willing to spend. If he plays video games, a video game is always nice, but that would be counter-productive for you, as he would be playing the game.

What I can tell you though is the best gift I got from any girlfriend I ever had ever.
She got me a Ralph Lauren set.

Ralph Lauren white polo that came with a Ralph Lauren soap and bottle of perfume.
This is why the gift was the best.
      1) She knew I loved RL clothing so picking was easy and she liked how I looked with it on shared gift.
      2) We got to both use the soap as we took showers together. Shared gift once again.
      3) She loved how the perfume smelled so she got all cudly whenever I wore it. Shared gift again.

Basically we got to share some aspect of the gift in some way. The best part about it is I don't wear perfume usually, so the bottle being large empties very slowly. Even though I am not with the girl anymore, whenever I see that bottle of perfume in the bathroom in front of the mirror I can't help but to think of her. Then sometimes I put some on and reminisce how she used to cuddle and how happy we were for a time. (because smell is the sense that has the most memory).

Ok, I don't want to write you a book here, but you get the picture right?
Get something you like too, or something you can benefit from even if it's your BF's gift.
My guess is that he just wants to make you happy, he'll be happy if the thing you get him makes you happy.

Look at me for instance. She knew I never wore perfume and got me a perfume she liked. I was just happy that she got happy whenever I wore it.
And next thing you know, it was my favorite gift ever, because it still draws memories.

I only wish the polo had lasted as long as the perfume did.

  10. QUESTION:
Could get breast cancer? Treatment help? Doctors and serious answers pls..?
So i am a 14 year old girl of very good health i have my regular check ups and every thing. However i was riding my 4-wheeler today out on one of my favorite trails, and when i went over a jump something happened i don't know exactly because it all went to fast but the handle bar jabbed me in my breast really hard. There was a huge bruise and i think i may have cracked a rib.
I have heard that if you hit your breast to hard you can get breast cancer i was just wondering if this was true? And if you have any advise for treating a cracked rib please also answer.

Thank you so much. Oh and yes i was wearing a helmet I just got unlucky with hitting my ribs instead

    • ANSWER:
Currently there is no info to relate breast trauma to the development of breast cancer.

Apply ice to the bruise, and take it easy on the 4 wheeler!

  11. QUESTION:
What should I sell my 4 wheeler for?
I have a 2005 Yamaha 350 Bruin. It's a great 4 wheeler, but it doesn't ever get used. We just don't have anything to use it for. I used to ride it, but then I had my daughter and I don't have time anymore. It's been used LESS than 100 hours total, there's no scratches on it, the tires are still perfect, it's in MINT condition. We bought it for a little more than ,000 new. I would also throw in the helmet that was 0, since I wouldn't have any use for that either. I was thinking ,200. But I really don't know much about the pricing of ATVs.
HOW MUCH should I sell it for. Duh. If you read the question you would have picked up on that. I'm saving for a car.

    • ANSWER:
What should you sell it for? Help pay off any outstanding debts, house payment, car payment, anything.

  12. QUESTION:
Is this fair treatment I am getting from my son?
I am a pensioner, (see my profile) and had a 250 cc John Dory 4 wheeler to ride around on on the farm where I live with my son and grandchildren.
My son yesterday had my 4 wheeler loaded and took it to town and put it up for sale becaus he said that I am endangering my self and the kids with it.
He even took my helmet and my gloves that go with it away....

I still do drive my own car to church on Sundays and today a salesman from town came out to the farm and took my 24 year old Volkswagen away also.
He said that my son had traded it in on a new car which they had delivered here.
I do not like the new car. I do not even know what kind of car it is and the color really does not suit me at all.....

Is the treatment I am getting from this son of mine fair on me ?

How can he decide for me what I should drive and what not?

I am really upset about this and thought I would ask your opinions before I talk to him about this all tonight.
My old Volkswagen was having trouble starting lately and my granddaughter today told me that the new car is on my name as was the old one, but why did he not consult me on all this, and what about my 4 wheeler?
I liked jamming up and down the farm road on it, now my fun is stopped and with the new car I suppose I would have to be careful.....

    • ANSWER:
Hi, I just read your profile and you sound amazing. I hope I am like you if/when I reach your age. I am a mere 61 and I don't think I have your get up and go. :)
I think if your son had spoken to you and consulted you about these decisions then you would feel differently. It is the lack of consultation that hurts, that feeling that just because you are old, you can no longer think for yourself or make your own decisions, which is wrong. In your son's eyes, he probably feels he is looking out for your welfare. There can't be that many 90+ year old ladies riding quad bikes around Africa! lol

However, I think you need to have a serious talk with him and tell him that you want your quad bike back, or a replacement if it is really gone. How dare he take away your enjoyment. If he saysit is dangerous, tell him that it is your decision whether you do something dangerous, you have earned the right. Also he needs to be told that you want to be consulted about decisions which affect your life and your well being. Don't let him off the hook. If he loves you (and I'm sure he does) he needs to show you this respect. You have my best wishes and highest admiration.

    • ANSWER:
Check on Ebay to see what the same model you have is selling for there. That will give you a good idea of where to start. Last year I sold a 1983 Honda four wheeler for 0 on ebay so you may be surprised what you could get for it.

  14. QUESTION:
mom & dad not on the same page.. help?
Here is our senario, I just bought 2 atv 3 wheelers last week. Obviously 3 wheelers can be very dangerous if not handled correctly or driven recklessly.

To no surprise our 4 year old daughter is very interested in them also. I purchased her a helmet and let her ride with me around the yard and we go very slow. I have taken her with for longer rides also and I am always a bit nervous with the understanding no matter how careful I am and slow I drive, there is always that possiblity.

I grew up with atvs and have good memories on them and really enjoy just going out for a drive after work.

Long story short, my wife HATES when I take my daughter with me.
If I drive on my own, she says my daughter is "heartbroken" that she can't ride with daddy. So someone is mad no matter what.

Is it best that I just sell them? I persoanlly have felt great out driving around on them ( I had/have been suffering from a bout of depression) and when I'm rising around with my daughter or on my own, I feel great.

I do worry about the dangers and I understand with time my daughter is going to want to drive it herself. Though I hate living life in fear of things. I feel I want to teach her how to be safe, make sure we have all the right safty gear, etc. Hopefully by that time I can afford something better and safer like a nice go kart.

I feel like I am creating stress and worry with this and that was not my intentinsion.

Should I sell them? Continue drivng with my daughter slow and safely, and teach her about them from an early age? If I keep them I want my daughter to be involved and enjoy them too? Am I wrong for this? I do understand my wife's concearns though.

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like your wife is just being a mom...moms tend to always think of the worst case scenario when it comes to their children, so she'll probably always be worried no matter what you choose to do with your daughter or how safe it is. Maybe if you try explain to her how important it is to you (having a hobby to help you cope with depression AND being able to share it with your daughter), she'll cut you some slack. Just make sure you give your wife an equal break to enjoy her hobbies, too =)

Have you considered buying a quad, or trading in one of your 3 wheelers for one? They're a lot safer, and your daughter will probably never notice the difference, giving you and your wife a little peace of mind (hopefully). Plus, you'll still have the 3 wheeler to ride when you are alone. Don't worry about breaking your daughter's heart if you decide to ride alone once in a while. Kids that age get "heartbroken" over everything when they don't get their way, and chances are she'll probably forget all about it before you're even back.

And, no, there is absolutely nothing wrong with you for wanting this. It's something that makes you feel good and you're bonding with your kid...your wife should learn to understand that.

  15. QUESTION:
    what could my dream mean?
ok so me and my dad [who died a year ago] were sitting at my grandpas house getting four wheelers on the trailer then we drove home and like when we got there this boy i really like [but he likes a different girl] was there with his four wheeler. then I got to ride with him up to the mountains but when we got up there and he took his helmet off and he was my ex boyfriend [we went out for 4 months]. any help?

    • ANSWER:
Your dream interestingly revolves around men you can't or won't have. Your deceased father, a guy who's not interested in you, and your ex. This dream tells me you put too much emphasis on defining yourself based on your relationship to others, specifically men. You are an independent and good person...you don't need anyone to define you.

  16. QUESTION:
How do I convince my parents and grand parents to buy me a dirt-bike?
PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS! I am 11 years of age and I have three four-wheelers. One (my old four wheeler) is an old Kawasaki 50. The best one (which is my brothers) is a wolverine 350 (he is 14 and is big for his age almost as big as my dad). Then my present four-wheeler, a DS Can-Am 250. It is almost as fast on straight paths (such as a road) as my brothers wolverine 350. But anyways, I have gear like a helmet (certified by DOT), eye protection (also certified), and a chest protector. I don't have those dirt-biking boots like a lot of other people. I have ridden a dirt-bike before at my ex-boyfriends house. We are still friends, too and I am looking to buy the same dirt-bike as he, its a Baja Motor-sports little dirt-bike. The link to it is:

    http://www.tractorsupply.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay_10551_10001_129464_-1______?rFlag=true&cFlag=1

I have done some research on it. Just not a lot. I think I might have to build back some trust with like everyone. So it is a 70 cc but goes really fast so they should be tricked 'cause it runs like a 125 cc. But the strange thing is that is is a 4-stroke. If I even talk about getting a dirt-bike to my father he always gets kinda mad. So I think he will really need some time to convince. If I get my mom convinced (I really need to re-build my trust with her) she might be able to talk to my dad and to convince even considering getting me a dirt-bike. I don't want to go slow but I will around them and go fast in the back. My grand-parents are really worried about me even on my four-wheeler. I never crashed or anything on it, either. So I'm pretty safe which I would be on the dirt-bike, too. Oh, only this one time,,, my dads friend came over with his mo-ped. I was going really fast and stuff and there were two cars like 40 feet from me and I didn't know what to do cuz I knew I would crash into one of them. So I just kinda stopped and I slid. It didn't really hurt much, but I'm pretty sure my father remembers that. But you have to admit, my choice was way better than crashing into the car.

So some of the questions are:

1.)How am I to re-build my trust with my parents?

2.) After I re-build my trust with my parents, how am I to convince them to buy me a dirt-bike?

3.) How am I to convince my grand-parents (which would be the people to buy me the dirt-bike) to buy me a dirt-bike?

    • ANSWER:
show u respect them butter them up then say how kool it look and pretend u not in it then let ur parents 2 no u better then ask in a special way and maybe they will

I know this is a re-post but i need a variety of answers. thanks

    • ANSWER:
As far as the issue of hitting your breast too hard that you can get breast cancer, I have not heard that to be true.

As for treating the cracked rib, I don't know of anything in particular to help treat it other than something for the pain until you can see the doctor.

However, I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say. However, even before doing that I would recommend letting your mom know what's going on so that she can help you keep an eye on the situation as well.
