Youth Riding Helmets Horse

Spend Your Summer In A Horse Camp

Now, the summer is fast approaching and are you considering sending your child to a summer camp with a horse program? Surely a lot of questions like what will my child learn? What kinds of horses are kept at these camps? Will normally arise.

A summer horse camp is a camp with a focus on horses-riding. The camp sessions may run from a single day to eight weeks long, depending upon the facility and the program selected. Many offer day camps that teach young children and novices the basics of horse riding. Most camps offer longer sessions where they teach horsemanship techniques to a variety of skill levels. Many of these camps are operated on full-time basis, year around horse farms. The summer camp program is great part of what the farms generally do. The farms also raise horses. It may train or board horses for other people. It will likely have programs whole year long, weather and climate permitting, where people of all ages can ride or learn to ride. Horses and horsemanship is a full-time business for these persons. Others are held at facilities that will not be horse farms, but keep all year at least part of the horses they use.

A horsemanship camp is a great way for your young child to learn the responsibility of caring for another living creature. They put children in an outdoor environment and help developing good socialization skills. A summer camp with a horse program has added benefit of teaching youngsters about these magnificent animals and developing horsemanship skills. Summer programs with horses as the central theme and related activities are found in all regions of the country. Some will focus on the equestrian skills and knowledge. These programs will have classroom studies and seminars that include basics of horse anatomy and the nature of horses along with instruction on feeding, care, and riding. These programs will assign the camper a horse for a three-week session. The care and feeding of that horse will be the responsibility of the child there. Riding skills will also be taught. Many camps will concentrate on English riding styles. Dressage techniques and patterns are practiced with eventing and show jumping. Many of these facilities have cross-country courses for more advanced riders and horses. Summer horse camps are often found on horse farms. These facilities include horse stables, pastures, show or performance arenas, and, depending upon the camp, a cross-country course also. Most also include access to trails through wooded or wilderness areas with proper guidance. Some will provide both covered and outdoor arenas. Most are set in beautiful landscapes complete with white board fences and other pastoral farm amenities for safety.

Safety is the primary element of the activities. Riders are always required to wear approved helmets and boots while on the horse. Every effort is made to match the right horse to the campers riding skills and their capabilities. Everyone is aware that horses are big animals, and because of their sheer size, can be dangerous in most extraordinary situations. So every effort is made to reduce the possible risks to the most minimal levels.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I get used horse riding gear?
My daughter has been riding for 2 months now. She is still really young, and I don't want or need to buy her a brand new riding helmet or pants. Before I even spend the money on new stuff, I want to make sure she'll stick with it. I am wanting to get her a helmet and riding pants though. I'm new to the riding world, and I don't know all the resources for riding gear. Is there an online resale (not ebay) store for riding gear? or if you live in NE Oklahoma, SW Missouri, or NW Arkansas, do you know of a resale shop that sells youth riding gear? Thanks!
Just to be a little more clear:
She is only 5. She has consistently been in love with horses (moreover the thought of them) since she was about 2 1/2, which is pretty impressive for a child that young to like something for that long. The stables she rides at provide helmets for the kids, and she wears jeans and has "cowboy" boots that she rides in. Riding pants would just be a lot more functional for her, and I think she'd really like the idea of her own helmet. I'm only looking for used, b/c I know gear is expensive, and she will grow out of it in no time. I'm not compromising her safety. I'm not big on buying brand new gear, when she will out grow it before she wears off the new. I'm sure as a rider or parent, you can understand that.
And thanks for the Craigslist and google references, I've tried those, and still come up empty... But Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Go to local tack shops(google), look on craigslist, ask other riders around the barn/area if they have any riding clothes they have outgrown.

Please don't buy a used helmet. Once the helmet has been landed on or the rider has fallen off, the helmet could be compromised and people won't share that fact with you. Invest in a helmet or borrow one when she is riding.

  16. QUESTION:
Can anyone explain the following paragraph from the bible?
    Ezekiel: Chapter 23

Eze:23:1: The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,
Eze:23:2: Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother:
Eze:23:3: And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity.
Eze:23:4: And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thus were their names; Samaria is Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah.
Eze:23:5: And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours,
Eze:23:6: Which were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses.
Eze:23:7: Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself.
Eze:23:8: Neither left she her whoredoms brought from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginity, and poured their whoredom upon her.
Eze:23:9: Wherefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted.
Eze:23:10: These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women; for they had executed judgment upon her.
Eze:23:11: And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her whoredoms more than her sister in her whoredoms.
Eze:23:12: She doted upon the Assyrians her neighbours, captains and rulers clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men.
Eze:23:13: Then I saw that she was defiled, that they took both one way,
Eze:23:14: And that she increased her whoredoms: for when she saw men pourtrayed upon the wall, the images of the Chaldeans pourtrayed with vermilion,
Eze:23:15: Girded with girdles upon their loins, exceeding in dyed attire upon their heads, all of them princes to look to, after the manner of the Babylonians of Chaldea, the land of their nativity:
Eze:23:16: And as soon as she saw them with her eyes, she doted upon them, and sent messengers unto them into Chaldea.
Eze:23:17: And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love, and they defiled her with their whoredom, and she was polluted with them, and her mind was alienated from them.
Eze:23:18: So she discovered her whoredoms, and discovered her nakedness: then my mind was alienated from her, like as my mind was alienated from her sister.
Eze:23:19: Yet she multiplied her whoredoms, in calling to remembrance the days of her youth, wherein she had played the harlot in the land of Egypt.
Eze:23:20: For she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of asses, and whose issue is like the issue of horses.
Eze:23:21: Thus thou calledst to remembrance the lewdness of thy youth, in bruising thy teats by the Egyptians for the paps of thy youth.
    Eze:23:22: There, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;
Eze:23:23: The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them: all of them desirable young men, captains and rulers, great lords and renowned, all of them riding upon horses.
Eze:23:24: And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments.
Eze:23:25: And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire.
Eze:23:26: They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels.
Eze:23:27: Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more.
Eze:23:28: For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated:
Eze:23:29: And they shall deal with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.
Eze:23:30: I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols.

WILL ANYONE OF YOU READ THIS TO YOUR CHILDREN??????????????
Answer to Yourselves...... and please tell me....what is the moral???
If you think this is false.....then i know your bible more than you do.....

    • ANSWER:
Probably wouldn't read this to my children, as they would be unlikely to understand, for one thing.

God is explaining through this graphic account his frustration with his relationship with Israel. He compares Israel and Judah (there were 2 Israelite kingdoms separately governed) to 2 sisters who are unfaithful and engage in adultery in an attempt to satisfy their lustful appetites. This symbolizes the fact that they worship the gods of the Egyptians, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, etc., rather than remaining faithful to the faith in one God. This is actually the second time in Ezekiel where a story of this nature is told.

Ezekiel is a difficult book to understand and is probably a candidate for "weirdest book in the Bible".

Youth Horseback Riding Helmets

Summer At Breckenridge

As presented in www.FirstLightSports.com

While my skis are gathering dust and rust in the basement I'm going half-crazy with downhill withdrawal. It seems that I can't do much about my beautiful ski edges slowly crusting over, but getting downhill?a well that's a different story.

Leave your skis and boards alone for the summer and head out west to Colorado for some summer fun. If you're thinking that Colorado without 100 inches of snow is like music without soul, you couldn't be more wrong. The music of the mountains is played in a slightly different key in the summer, but it's still powerful and enticing. The range of activities is a vibrant chromatic spectrum ranging from the simple to the sublime.

This summer my family & I packed up the mini-van, loaded the bikes on the rear-rack and pointed the nose west toward beautiful Colorado. Driving from Wisconsin to Colorado provides what seems like endless scenes of bucolic prairie, corn fields, and other flat (really, really damn flat) landscapes. It may seem like a scene out of "National Lampoon's Family Vacation@" but I drove all of Hwy-80 West without once spotting Christie Brinkley in a red Ferrari convertible, and I assure that I looked!

We sojourned in the little village of Frisco, CO at a centrally located condo. Easy access to biking, hiking, and right down the road from one of the great summer recreation areas: Breckenridge. You can get to this gem in less than two hours from Denver following I-70 (just west of the Eisenhower tunnel) to Hwy-9. The center of summer activities at Breck is at the base of Peak 8. There one can find the lifts which will take you up the mountain on either chair-5 or the Colorado SuperChair.

Less than two months after concluding its 39th ski season, the Breckenridge Ski Resort ushered in summer with the opening of its Peak 8 Fun Park. Resort officials say summer attractions at Peak 8 have come a long way from 23 years ago when the resort opened the state's first alpine slide, dubbed The SuperSlide, which is a half-mile long from top to bottom. Other day guest services include Amaze'n Breckenridge, a wooden maze where participants race against the clock, the SuperPutt miniature golf course and Alpine BBQ.

Mountain biking, hiking, and Colorado SuperChair rides are available at Peak 8 and Peak 9 activities include horseback riding and mountain biking.

SuperSlide single ride tickets are for adults 13 and older and for children 7-12 (children 6 and under ride free with a paying adult). Multi-ride tickets are available as well. SuperPutt is per person for adults, for children; Amaze'n Breckenridge costs for adults and for children for the first trip into the maze, additional same day maze visits are available for each. Rides on the Colorado SuperChair cost individually.

Youth Horse Riding Helmets

I Finally Found a Polaris Youth ATV

I simply wasn't willing to spend the 00 that it absolutely was visiting value me to induce my daughter the Polaris Youth ATV that she's been wanting for it slow now. Though the sticker price was but 00, once they added on the commission, founded fees and taxes, the worth became more than 00. I just knew I could notice a Polaris Youth ATV for less.

I started wanting on-line and found some a lot of moderately priced Polaris Youth ATVs. The problem was that every Polaris Youth ATV dealer I'd realize on-line seemed to want a king's ransom for the shipping charges. The prospect of buying a Polaris Youth ATV online was quickly dwindling before my eyes, because the addition of shipping charges made these alternative potential Polaris Youth ATV purchases concerning the same as at the native ATV store.

I was about to administer up, which means that the Polaris Youth ATV purchase would have to be saved for Christmas. At this point it occurred to me to appear at one of the online auction websites. I decided to strive the auction juggernaut, eBay first. And lo and behold, I was ready to search out just the deal on a replacement Polaris Youth ATV that I might been seeking.

    Eze:23:22: There, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;

    Eze:23:22: There, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side;

Western Style Riding Helmets

Horse Tack - Taking Apart the Bridle

Understanding what all those Straps are for

While most horse people are familiar with what parts make up a bridle, it is remarkable how few truly understand what goes into it. With so many parts, it is no wonder that people don’t consider the reasons for them. In fact, it is not unusual to see someone throw together a simple bridle that does little more than hold the bit in the horse’s mouth, and ride off without a care.

So what are all those straps, and what are they for?

Probably the most often misunderstood part of the bridle is the noseband. Many people believe that the noseband is there to hold the horse’s mouth closed. Of course, if you look at the positioning of the noseband, it is quickly evident that no matter how tight you fasten it, the noseband could never hold the mouth shut.

Interestingly enough, the noseband is the least necessary part of the bridle. In fact, many western bridles skip it altogether. With very little actual functionality, the cavasson noseband is purely there for looks! With varieties ranging from broad to narrow, and from raised to flat, riders choose a look that best suits their horse. While there are specialty nosebands that are more than just decoration, the average bridle’s noseband isn’t really necessary at all.

So if the noseband is useless, what about the browband? While it often makes a fashion statement, much like the noseband, the browband is an essential part of the bridle. Without the browband, the crown piece would slip back down the horse’s neck, pulling on the bit, and making the bridle uncomfortable for the horse. While some western bridles only use a half browband, circling around one ear, the purpose is the same.

Another strap that sometimes seems useless is the throatlatch. While it seems obvious that it is there to hold the bridle on, generally the bridle will stay in place without the throatlatch at all. Basically it acts as a safety net, to hold the bridle in place should something happen that threatens to pull the bridle over the horse’s ears.

The cheek pieces have another obvious use. They act as the connection between the crown piece and the bit. But why do they need to be separate from the crown piece? Without separate check pieces it would be difficult to adjust the length of the bridle for different horses. With two adjustable cheek pieces, it is possible to fine tune the tightness of the bit in the horse’s mouth. A single buckle on the side would not allow for this fine tuning.

Of course the reins require no explanation. But, do most reins have a braided appearance? Is this more fashion? No. The laced part of the reins is there to offer the rider a better grip. When a horse becomes sweaty, the reins can become quite slippery. Some reins have alternate forms of grips such as rubber coating, small crosspieces or actual braiding of the leather. It is possible to find smooth reins, but they are uncommon.

So now you know the basics of what makes up a bridle. Each strap has its unique purpose, even if it is a frivolous one.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Helmets for Western riders?
I am just wondering if anyone wears helmets riding western. I originally come from an english style barn, and I am now riding at a ranch. I still wear my helmet, but it is all beat up and ugly. I am thinking I want one that is a little bit more of a low profile and western-ish. Do you have any to suggest?

    • ANSWER:
of course! I've played with english a bit here & there, but now i'm strictly western...trail riding, actually. Other than children, i've never seen another person wearing a helmet on the trails. whatever, doesn't bother me. I like my brain and being alive! I'm starting barrel racing and reining soon, and i plan to still wear my helmet. Right now i just have the troxel spirit, though if it ever breaks i want this one: http://www.horse.com/item/troxel-dakota-helmet/SLT653550/ It's nice and western-y, for schooling. If you're looking for more of a show helmet, this is what i'm getting: http://www.horse.com/item/troxel-sierra-helmet/SLT654245/ So for ranch work, either one would work. For showing, the second one would be better.

  2. QUESTION:
Would you or wouldn't you? A Pic Included?
I was just reading Equus and came across a new western hat helmet that is ASTM/SEI certified, looks like a western hat, and even has an adjustable brim. It got me thinking about the many reason I've heard over the years as to why Western riders don't like traditional helmets...too hot, impedes vision, not the style of the discipline, etc. This isn't an opening to the great debate about everyone's right to ride in attire they do or do not choose to.

Rather a simple question of would you start riding in a helmet now that a new look is available?

My interest in your responses is not based on judgement or conversion. It's professional. I work with people who suffer brain injuries as a result of a variety of occurences (many sports-related, car accidents too, so sad) and like to stay current with what factors influence people when making decisions regarding cranial safety.

Oh, yeah, and why or why not?

I also don't give thumbs down. If you come and answer, you have my appreciation. Trolls are ignored.

Hmmm...I don't know why it didn't link right to the western hat looking helmet I'm referring to. I will try again. Lusitano has the direct link in her reply, if this doesn't work!

    • ANSWER:
I ride both Western and English and use a helmet each and everytime I ride, whether its a young colt or my broke show mare.
Why don't Western people wear helmets? You can say what you want, but an awful lot of it is peer pressure, plain and simple. Most people comment exactly like some of your posters "You can if you don't feel safe or if you're riding a poorly trained horses". That means that there is an unspoken other side to that comment "If you use a helmet you are a poor or beginner rider, or riding a bad horse." Its as simple as that - by wearing a helmet many people think you are admitting to being inexperienced or on a bad horse. I know riders who would wear one, except for the negative comments or thoughts.
The cowboy world is supposed to be strong, independant, confident, outdoorsey. Somehow people don't feel that a helmet works in with that.
I have had several good Western trainers tell me "I'm experienced so I don't need one." I've had other show people say "What, do you think you're an English rider?" when I go into the warm-up pen with a helmet. I've had all the arguements that helmets make inexperienced riders too confident so they will take more chances. But its all a bunch of bull, and it will take more than a bit of peer pressure to change my mind - I'm a nurse and know what head injuries can do to people. Sure, they don't prevent neck and spinal cord injuries. But they DO protect brain injuries. Why not wear something even if it will only save you life 70% of the time instead of 100% of the time?
I don't feel the urge to force adult riders to wear a helmet. I just wish people would look at the option objectively, and not kid themselves why they don't wear one. I have friends who race dirt bikes, they would never consider racing or even just riding at home without a helmet, and they are tough, macho guys. We need to allow ourself to still be tough, confident, free-thinkers even with a helmet on our heads (and to be honest, my Troxel helmet is just as comfy as a ball cap and does not bug me - get one that fits right and it won't squish your head or give you a headache. By the way, my show cowboy hat gives me a headache, long before a helmet will)
It will change one day. It was just like this with seatbelts. Rural country people didn't want them, there was lots of complaining and cheating, but slowly things changed and now people wear seatbelts. Some might not, but with the changes in vehicles (that beep constantly if the seatbelt isn't on) and the tickets for seatbelt use, people now mostly take it for granted.
So yes, I would and do wear a helmet constantly. Do I think this Western one will become popular? Perhaps. I've seen it before. In my opinion it really does not appear that Western. And even if it did, I think few Western riders will suddenly begin using one just because of it. There is much behind the lack of helmet use in the Western world, and it will take time, education and perhaps some enforcement at the youth level before things change.
Edit (See Putts-E, I'm learning how to edit properly!) First of all, I saw your new listing of the cowboy hat helmet, and that MIGHT just work for some riders who want to keep safe but are scared to be "un-cool" It certainly does look like a typical cowboy hat in the picture.
Now, to the Gallop poster after me, the nurse. I wish I had my articles here in front of me - where is the exact data I require for this? I'll do the best from memory and hopefully won't be too far off. Studies within the last 3 years have shown horseback riding to be the highest incidence of serious injury and death over every single other sport. This included dirtbikes, quads, etc. It was estimated by taking the number of hours each person put into the sport and then figuring out the number of injuries per hour. So 1 hour of dirt biking compared to 1 hour of horseback riding. The satistics were surprising. The average person seriously injured was in their 40s, and ridden many years, were riding broke horses. (We all know that total beginners get hurt more often, but they would have way less hours on a horse than an experienced rider, and that makes satistics different) Fractures and minor injures of course top the list. But head injuries were by far the leading cause of death. Don't get me wrong - its still a very tiny percentage of people who horse ride who will be serious hurt, least of all die. But the same studies show that signifigant brain injury can occur from a fall only 3 feet high (standing on a chair, or falling off a low step) When riding the rider's head is on average 8 feet in the air. Many people that sustained brain injuries were not thrown from a bucking horse, something unusual happened, and they fell off and landed on their head. Sometimes the horse was standing still.
I do wish I had those two recent articles stuck on my wall, they'd do a much better job explaining than I can. But they do make believers of me. And what is the disadvantage of wearing a helmet? They're hot. Yes, somewhat hotter than a bare head but not much worse than a ball cap. They're uncomfortable? No, go try on a bunch and find one that you like and that fits your shape of your head properly. They're expensive? Nope, I bought mine for and that's cheap for horse stuff.
(Boy, I should be getting a commission for helmets, shouldn't I? I guess I'm just a believer and find helmets simple to use, even if there is no guarantee they will save my life if something awful was to happen. You also know the same thing is true of bike helmets, seatbelts, or motorcycle helmets)

    • ANSWER:
      english or western? english
do you wear a helmet? every time, because the one time that i don't wear one is the time that i will fall off, or get bucked off, and have a serious head injury, everytime that i've landed on my head when i've fallen i've ended up with a concussion, and the ER doctors all said that if i hadn't been wearing a helmet it could have been a lot worse.
name of horse you ride? Quiche
whats your favorite thing about horses? everything, eccept when they are in a bratty mood.
what do you wear to ride? usually black kentucky jods, brown paddock boots, and either a tank top, t-shirt, or a hoodie or my winter coat, depending on the weather.
do you own any tack? saddle, bridle, several sets of reins, bits, everything
      discipline? Saddle Seat
whats your favorite thing about your discipline? how flashy it looks when done corectly
why did you choose your discipline? most of the barns around my town are saddle seat and driving, when i started looking for places to ride when we first moved here, we looked for barns and it was mostly saddle seat, i had been riding western at the time, but we chose a barn that did western and saddle seat, and i loved the trainer from the moment i met her ( like a mother daughter, or sisterly love, not lesbian love) then the horse that they had for western decided he didn't like western any more, and we didn't get along so i switched to saddle seat.
why do you ride horses? because i am the only one in my family who does, everybody in my family has something, my younger boy cousins have their sports, and my younger girl cousins have dance and swimming,
do you have a riding buddy? yes!
whats your favorite store to buy horse stuff at? i love big dees, and i also like Horseloverz.com
do you volunteer with horses? name of organization? i use to, it was at a riding school near my old house where i learned to ride and the other one was called Camp Cheerful.
how tall is your horse? 15.2
have you ever fallen of? why? too many to count.
do you know how to tack up and untack your horse? yes
do you use breakable halters? why? no, because there is a horse that my horse is turned out with breaks all my halters because she rips them off then dangles them around like a chew toy,
do you leave your horses halter on in the pasture and turnout? yes
how often do you clean your tack? bit? not often enough
do you like to buy stuff for your horse? all the time, i am a compullisve shopper and it only gets worse when i shop for horse stuff.
do you have a style for riding? (like everything matches, certain brands ONLY, etc) yes, all the tack must match in color, my bridle is black, my saddle is black, and so is my martinglae, hope this helps ♥

  4. QUESTION:
    english show questions?
okay, i have been jumping and equitation for roughly a year now and currently jumping around 2 feet. i will be showing this year and have some kind of weird or common sense questions that i am too aftaid to ask the trainer,,,

    1) i am in the process of breaking in my tall/field boots what is your suggestion and also, i have been told to get them soaking wet and wear them til they dry. does that work? will it ruin my boots? will they shrink too much?

    2) helmet- i have a troxel sierra (western, leather helmet) that i lesson in. i am not a fan of helmet covers.... i was looking at international show helmets are they good?
also my trainer sells riding stuff and has a nice show helmet, but it has a silver stripe that i'm personally not a fan of. are the solid black ones out of style for equitation? if so, i'll just get the one with the "skunk" stripe

    3) do you wear the button up shirt under your coat tucked into your breeches or out?

    thanks!

    • ANSWER:
None of your questions are stupid, don't feel bad about asking your trainer.

      1. Don't soak them. Get some mink oil (available in most leather goods depts, TSC has it). Apply for a few days and wear your boots as long as possible. The oil will really speed up the process. Stop before they become too soft, a couple applications should be plenty.

      2. Not up on the current helmet trends in the hunter ring, but I feel you can never go wrong with solid black. Trends come and go, but classic & understated is always appropriate.

      3. Tuck it in. This will help to keep it in place and also, you don't want it to be visible under your coat. Especially when you go into 2 point, onlookers would be able to tell it wasn't tucked in. Always err on the side of neatness.

Motorcycle Diary: Riding a Motorcycle in Oaxaca, Mexico

Alvin Starkman M.A., LL.B.

My longtime passion for riding a motorcycle took a twenty year hiatus until taking up residency in Oaxaca. I ignored the foreshadowing and warnings. While my story pales compared to the epic journey of ChA Guevara popularized in the film Motorcycle Diaries, there is a tale to be told, with observations and advice for those with such suicidal ideations.

For Oaxacans, it's part economic necessity and part climactic permissiveness, with street logjams and a parking crisis factored in, as well as, dare I opine, a somewhat different attitude towards life and living amongst those at and below a certain socio-economic levelafatalistic. What's striking is the paucity of helmeted riders, and prevalence of entire families (the record number of family members seen on one bike is currently five) who take to negotiating the jammed streets on a single motorbike often mechanically unfit, each member including young children bare-headed and unsafely dressed (no gloves, leathers, jeans, etc.). Enforcing the helmet law and mandatory education might help. Educators must remember to teach that the helmet is to be worn on the head, not simply slung over an arm. Additionally, owners of deliver services such as and by example, Chuchos Tortas y Mas, should watch their couriers leaving the premises to ensure helmets are worn and not carried.

For my part, I've been accused of having yet another mid-life crisis at 55, having recently purchased a 150 cc. Honda aBrosa, off road moto for use on the streets, complementing our car and pick-up. Perhaps each above-noted reason applies to me, despite leading a middle class existence.

I sold my Suzuki 550 in the mid 1980s when my wife became pregnant. But now, in quasi-retirement, family grown, life insurance policies kept current, I was only minimally fazed when Canadian Consul Frances May warned that she's lost three friends to motorcycle accidents. And compadre Pancho was in three accidents within about 2 years. He once took me on a trip with some of his motorcycle buddies through the mountains to the town of Sola de Vega. It was the first time in 15 years that I'd been on a bike. I forgot a cardinal rule: never brake while negotiating a turn on gravel. I recall regaining consciousness, covered in blood, with severe knee pain, in the back room of some pharmacy, to teary-eyed Pancho, shaking me with hands on my shoulders while screaming acompadre, compadre!a

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Should kids wear helmets when riding horses?
Am I overreacting to this? My ex-husbands' family has a ranch with several horses, one of which is not broke yet. The uncle is apparently letting my children sit on this horse for short periods of time to "get her used to kids" and also letting them ride another horse in the arena while he works with the female. My worst fear is that this green horse would buck my children off, or spook the other horse while they were riding, and they would be injured, killed or paralyzed. I know the adults are right there but there is always the "what if" factor. I have insisted that they not sit on the female, and only ride when there are no other animals in the arena, and wear helmets, but my requests have fallen on deaf ears. My ex and his mother think I am a nutcase, even though I have ridden both English and Western my whole life, and as far as I know neither of them have had experience with horses until his mother re-married about 2 years ago.
Also, my girls know they should wear helmets, (they are 3 and 5), and they tell their daddy, "If Superman (Chistopher Reeve) can get hurt on a horse then so can we, and Mommy wants us to be safe." But he still doesn't require any safety measures.

    • ANSWER:
they should i am an neuro ICU nurse and have seen many children and adults come in that have fallen or been thrown off a horse with massive brain damage, or some type of irreversible neuro deficits. my daughter rides everyday but never without her helmet. much better as a parent to keep ur child safe than risk their life on such a powerful animal.

  2. QUESTION:
    Low Profile Riding Helmet?
I am looking for a low profile riding helmet, preferably one by Troxel.
I currently have a Troxel Spirit Helmet, and its so huge on me it makes me look like a kid.
I am looking into getting the Troxel Sierra Helmet (as I ride western) anyone know if that is low-profile?

    • ANSWER:
The lowest profile helmet I have found is the Tipperary helmet. It fits people with round heads very well. Troxel fits long ovals well.

Tipperary helmets are available from Stateline tack, Dover Saddlery, and many others.

Congratulations on wearing your helmet!!! I am an Occupational Therapist and have treated too many brain injured people from horse and motorcycle accidents. You are a smart person, and obviously wish to stay that way!!!

  3. QUESTION:
My brother kicked my helmet down the stairs. :| ?
Will it be okay to wear tomorrow if I go and buck out a couple of wild horses? :D

    Kidding, kidding.

My brother really did kick my helmet down the stairs, so obviously I want a new one. The thing is, I want an upgrade. Right now, the helmet I have is a Troxel Sport. I would like to get a Troxel still, but I'm not sure which one. I would need to pick from these helmets, as they are about as much as I'd like to pay right now, and it's easy to run to my local TSC. Unless there's a better Troxel helmet that's about the same price that's worth looking for, so by all means recommend if that's the case.

http://www.tractorsupply.com/equine/riding-helmets/troxel-legacy-gold-duratec-slim-profile-training-helmet-with-gps-iii-for-horseback-riding-medium-black-5905394 (When I first looked at it at my local TSC, I didn't really like it, though the next week, I kind of liked it, and looking at pictures, I like it more. I think if they had the red at TSC, my decision would be made. XD Ah well.)

http://www.tractorsupply.com/equine/riding-helmets/troxel-dakota-duratec-western-trail-recreational-helmet-with-gps-iii-for-horseback-riding-small-brown-5905378 (I'm kind of neutral, it's the same price with pretty much the same features as the Legacy Gold...)

http://www.tractorsupply.com/equine/riding-helmets/troxel-spirit-traditional-training-helmet-with-gps-ii-dial-for-horseback-riding-small-black-5905205 (I do kind of like the other two more than this one, but I'd like to hear what people think of it. It has a different fit thing on the inside, but it's cheaper. I like that the other two seem to have a smaller profile, than this one.)

I don't show, or anything right now, so It honestly doesn't matter. Nor do I really ride english, or western definitively... I'd like to do Dressage, and foxhunting, but I don't see that realistically happening for a few years.

Additionally, I've also recently had my hair cut too short to pull back into a ponytail, so I can never keep it under control when I wear my helmet. Should I just buy some hairnets?

    • ANSWER:
Argh.... SIBLINGS. Hmph. My sister stole my stirrup leathers, and claimed they were hers all along. I had to go buy new ones!

Actually, believe it or not, I have the first one, my older sister has the second one, and my younger sister has the third one!! LOL.

The first one is great. I broke it a couple months ago though, I fell and hit my head on the standard... ouch. It is really breathable, light weight, and over all comfortable. I liked it a lot.

The second one I have worn a few times. I really can't tell a difference between it and the first one, except it might have been a little heavier. But that could have just been me....

the third one is great too, and is actually lighter feeling.

They are all pretty good, but I am biased and like the first one best, since it was my own for a really long time!!

Don't get hairnets. They are annoying. I would try using a headband if I were you. How short? Shoulder length?
If it's sort of a boy cut or whatever, like a bob, then you might not need to do anything.

  4. QUESTION:
I have a couple horse questions that I need to be answered..?
Hi, I am a 12 year old girl that has a couple horse questions that I need answered. Please, NO RUDE COMMENTS/ANSWERS! I just want my questions answered nicely with respect. I own 1 horse right now. "Bandit" is a purebred white TB gelding. He is 11 years old and 17.0 hands high. I have bought him from an auction 2 years ago and I love him to death ever since got to pet him the first time! He is my best friend and I want to do lots of things with him. I have been riding for 6 years western and now starting to go into English. I'm a confident beginner, but isn't scared on horses. I'm just telling you about my horse and my riding skills so then it will be easier for you to answer my questions down below.

(1.) I know how to walk, & trot on a horse so now on my friends pony I have tried the canter in English (Not in Western yet, only once but that was very short and up a hill). I was wondering how to do the canter. I have tried to sit the canter but then I always end up bouncing around in the saddle but not falling off. I know how to hold both reins on English and not hold onto anything, and when I go into a canter I bounce around. Then I'll try to post it, but then I bounce around even more. How would I do this? Do I have to squeeze my thighs into the horse?

(2.) I am wanting to start a riding club. Like, just going on trail rides with kids. Probably kids from 9 and younger. I would make them bring their own horse if anyone wants to join. It would be .00 a person and when they would get here on the day it's supposed to be, we would go for a long trail ride and have snacks and just have fun and play horse games on horseback. I have my mom and dad here and we have insurance. My mom and dad would ALWAYS be supervising us to make sure none of us get hurt. We have lots of helmets if the kids don't have any for riding or they could bring their own. Do you think this is a good idea? I think it would be fun! I don't care if you say no, it's not a good idea, I'd probably will still do it.

(3.) My horse has got a nail in his foot a couple weeks ago and he is limping. My dad got the nail out a couple weeks back but he still limps. My dad gave him lots of needles, and dresser cream. My horsey friend says "Everyday, put his leg in a bucke of warm water and Ebson salt for 10 - 15 minutes 2 times a day and then you will notice a week later or two, he will stop limping and he would be ok." She even said get a boot for his hind right leg that got hurt with so then no dirt or rocks will get into it and make it even worse. Is my friend right?

(4.) What does it take to be a true cowgirl? Just asking for fun! lol :)

(5.) At the beginning of these questions I told you about my gelding, and you know that he is limping. And so before that, I wanted to start barrel racing, pole bending, and gymkhana with him but now I can't because he is hurt. What should I do? Should I buy another horse and compete with him or what?

    Thanks! NO RUDE ANSWERS/COMMENTS!

    • ANSWER:
      1. Cantering is actually fairly easy if you've got a nice balanced seat. Definitely easier than sitting the trot. Squeezing is BAD. Squeezing will pull you out of the saddle even more because you are tensing. Posting is a good exercise, but not something you want to learn from. Just stick your belly out and up, sit heavy in your butt and legs, and let your legs feel like they are paralyzed and really, really heavy. It's easiest if you have someone longe you while you practice.

      2. BAD IDEA. A) YOU cannot start a riding club. An adult can. And then they would need a business license and some really good insurance. It would be your parents paying the bill if some kid fell off and their parents decided to sue. I know you said you have insurance...but does that cover a five year old falling on their head or someone's pony breaking their leg? And I know very few parents who would trust a 12 year old to take their kid off on a horseback adventure.

      3. Yes, you're friend is right. Doing nothing is setting it up for an abscess.

      4. A hat and a cow

      5. Yes, get another horse. This one is limping and can't be fixed. That makes him useless.

  5. QUESTION:
Do Muslims understand that it's considered rude and antisocial to cover your face in most Western countries?
Kids wearing hoodies, people wearing balaclavas or scarves covering their faces, or full-face motorcycle helmets when not riding a bike... these are all regarded as socially unacceptable in countries like the UK. Some or all of these would not be allowed in shops, and certainly not in bank and building society branches. Given this long-standing social convention, can Muslims understand why it is regarded as unacceptable for Muslim women to cover their faces? It's the same as if we violated social conventions in foreign countries by showing the soles of our feet, going nude on the beaches etc.
    Thanks phoenix
"People should be allowed to worship God in the way they see fit, not what you dictate to be appropriate." - I don't think religious beliefs should give anyone any special rights or privileges that they wouldn't otherwise have, do you? I don't think we should be consider someone's choice of religion to be specially deserving of respect, more so than (say) their choice of dress for any other reason.
If I wanted to wear shorts and a certain country regarded that as being unacceptable, then I would either wear trousers or go elsewhere. This seems to be the sensible approach, to me.
    Florence: Thanks, I agree.
'She said' - Sorry, but the same issues are operating in both cases. Shorts are rude in some countries, full-face veils in others. It's as simple as that.
'She said' - why should we make exceptions or special cases for 'faith'. It's a choice, like any other choice.
"Ever consider how disrespectful it is for Westerners who are in Muslim countries to parade around in shorts and T-shirts or for Western women to go around NOT covered up." - My point EXACTLY. The same applies to wearing a veil in the West. It's rude and disrespectful.
"Their religion is part of who they are" - No, it's a choice like any other choice. After all, people can and do change their religions. It happens all the time. Religion can't entitle you to special privileges, any more than any other choice.
Neither nuns, priests nor the Pope cover their faces, do they?
"You know what i find offensive? Intolerant people who want everyone to look, dress and behave like them and if they dont well, they just have to be removed from society." - Don't you think it's rude and disrespectful to deliberately flout social conventions?
Like it or not, we all have to live in society and take account of other people's feelings. We can't just be excused from that on account of religion, any more than we can be excused on grounds of any other kind of choice or preference.
"I am a westerner and what i find offensive in my country is neither here nor there, because i am not asking you not to wear shorts or bikini's or hoodies and you have no right to ask a religious woman minding her own business that she has no right to modestly cover her face if she so desires as regards to the guidlines of her faith." - Fine, but do it in a country where it's regarded as socially acceptable.
It's simply a matter of common courtesy. I don't see why Muslims have to go against that.
"If nudity in the peaches is part of your religion then claim so, otherwise there is no anology here." - The fact that the veil is worn for religious reasons is entirely irrelevant to the the fact that it's regarded as rude and disrespectful and unacceptable.

    • ANSWER:
HAVE U EVER HEARD OF A FULLY DRESSED MUSLIM WOMAN COVERED FROM HEAD TO TOE GETTING RAPED?NOW DONT GET ME WRONG BUT WE ARE MORE RESPECTED BECAUSE WE COVER OUR BODY AND PEOPLE ARE ACTUALLY LISTENING TO US AND WHAT WE SAY AND NOT DROOLING OVER OUR BODIES

Do you08: Would you say the same to a Muslim who was offended by me going nude on a beach in his country?
Sloan: So why do Western women have to wear headscarves if they go to a Muslim country, avoid wearing short skirts etc? Should they be able to wear what they like?
"Its very difficult to strike a balance I think." - A very perceptive answer, I would say. Thanks.
Do you8: No, it's a valid comparison because these things *are* regarded as unacceptable in both cases. That's the plain fact of the matter. Perhaps it would be nice if no-one ever cared what anyone wore or didn't wear at any time, but that is not how the world is at the moment.
Pinguino: I didn't mention anything being illegal, so that's not relevant. The plain fact is that covering your face is considered rude in Western countries. It's as simple as that.
"When you are talking about covering one's face in reference to Muslims that is about religious freedom which is something which is guaranteed in the US or UK" - You're free to believe what you want but that doesn't mean you can then ignore social conventions because of it.

    • ANSWER:
"Socially unacceptable" and "illegal" are two completely different things; what you define "socially unacceptable", and on which basis? For instance: if in a Muslim Country is socially unacceptable showing showing your ankles and they say "Because we consider that 'nudity'", you may morally question that but at least they're giving you *a reason*; now, be specific: WHY is covering one's face socially unacceptable? Why this make you feel offended? And what if you are but other people aren't...?

Another issue is where covering one's own face is "illegal", like in Italy: allowed (or even compulsory) for safety reasons only, otherwise people in public places always have to be identifiable.

But that's a religion/law clash, the same happen when a person that is legally married to more than one person enter in a Country where being married to more than one person is illegal. I don't demand I have a solution for such kind of problem, but my premise (socially unacceptable vs illegal) is the point, here.

      Edit

It is relevant if the point is somebody demand (I'm not saying you're doing) people should be compelled not to do something that's actually legal (in whichever Country, of course). Personally I think THIS is socially unacceptable, especially if the reason is just being annoyed by a behavior/way of dressing and there's not a serious issue, like safety.

  7. QUESTION:
What to pack for horse camp?
Okay, so it's not really "horse camp", more like me staying over at a friend's house to help break her filly. (: (She's doing so good - even little kids can ride her now! But she's not finished out yet.)

I will likely be outside for a whole lot of the day, and it's winter here which means it'll be like, 15-20 degrees. I've never done this kind of thing before, so are there any specific clothes I should wear?

I ride western, so no need for breeches and whatnot.
I am bringing my own pillow, blanket, personal supplies, helmet, and winter boots.

Will likely be doing this many weekends!

    • ANSWER:
What I wear are thermal clothing under my normal clothes and bring a sweater and coat if it gets colder. Toe and hand warmers are wonderful to use especially if you put them in your boots. Thick winter work gloves are a must too.

  8. QUESTION:
What gear should my 7 year old horse rider have?
Neither my husband or I have ever been around horses, but our 7 year old adores them and she has been taking western>english riding lessons. She has been using the schools helmets and we bought her some fairly inexpensive boots with a small heel. She seems to be fairly committed, so we want to buy her the stuff the other kids are wearing, but we aren't sure how much of that is really important, and we don't have a clue as to the differences between helmets, breeches, jods, chaps, half chaps, etc. Could anyone make me a list of things they would buy their fast-growing 7year old rider? Currently she is working on her canter, but I think she is long ways from getting her post just right and jumping etc. Thanks so much!
Thank you guys, so much! Your answers were very helpful!!! I will be taking her this week to the tack store to buy her gloves, breeches, half chaps (she doesn't complain about her thighs, but she has complained about her calves) a helmet and and a back brace! Thank you so much for the explanations and clarifications!
She's taking taking her lessons down here at Pebble Beach Equestrian, and they have been swamped with shows and camp, so it's been somewhat difficult to nail anyone down for questions.
    Again, thank you so much!!!

    • ANSWER:
It's hard to decide with growing kids. What I would suggest is getting a basic inexpensive pairs of breeches. The reason I say inexpensive is because since she's growing you don't need a pair that will last forever, just a pair that will last until she is too big for them. Breeches help a rider alot. I find them easier to ride in because they have more stretch then jeans. As for chaps you don't have to have them, but if she plans on showing or if riding gives her blisters or sores on her legs then you need to get some. Full chaps go all the way up her legs, and usually have some type of fringe on them. I mainly see western riders in these. If she's getting sores on her things than these would be useful, but if she's not getting sores then I would not buy these. Half chaps go up to the bottom of the knee, and I personally have a pair of these. You can get colorful ones, or leather ones, but I would only get high-quality leather ones when she stops growing. The colorful ones tend not to last as long, but they are way cheaper. Since she's growing I would go with good-quality cheap stuff, because she will outgrow it soon. As for helmets, make sure the helmet is certified. She may want a colorful, and that's fine. If the black ones are cheaper get one of those, and then let her pick out a helmet cover that goes over the helmet. If will keep the helmet cleaner, and she's get the color or pattern she wants. When looking for these things I would suggest going to a local tack store, and telling the sales people what you need. They are extremely nice, and helpful. Don't let them sucker you into alot of extra, expensive stuff though. I personally go to Horsetown, but I don't know if there's one near you. Have fun picking out everything, and make sure your daughter is there to try everything on.

  9. QUESTION:
Why are the western societies so obsessed with safety?
Back in the 19th century, it was ok for a kid to shoot a gun and drink a beer while doing it, and for someone to ride a horse without a helmet. it was ok to build a fire in your back yard and have 100 ppl in a 10 square foot room. you could slip on a wet floor and just cuss out the store owner then laugh about it, ya know. now i cant, even in the privacy of my own car, take off my seat belt and text message while driving. and the Govt wonders why its so poor, its because the laws of Darwinism (survival of the fittest) is being broken by society's standards of general good health. there was a reason for the low life spans, to make room for the coming generations. now were up to what 6 billion ppl in the world. I for one don't want to live a day past 60. so in closing, why are the western societies so obsessed with safety?
also, idk if this is the right spot, but its where Yahoo told me to put it

    • ANSWER:
Firstly because we have improved our understanding and compassion and it is never good to see someone hurt or killed over stupidity.

Also we have become a very litigious or law suing society, people sue over everything so having to take precautions and is necessary.

Also you do not understand Darwin theory of evolution at all. Survival of the fittest means that the fittest for the environment. As in any things that was best suited to adapt and survive the environment. It does not mean health or anything like that.

Also to play it safe like wearing seat belts has meant that a lot less people aer in hospital with paraplegia or brain damage and then society has to pay for their recovery or care.

Unnecessary deaths or injuries is not only inhumane but a huge cost in terms of money, time and resources.

So there are very good reason to have good safety standards and good health care.

Yes the world is overpopulated but to allow disease and suffering is not a good way of dealing with that.

Good education about family planning and contraception and good acces to adequate health services is the answer.

Western Riding Helmets For Children

Grab Your Kid the Cutest Cowboy Boots From Harley Davidson

Children will always associate cowboy boots as grownup shoes worn by their parents and other important men and now that they are given the chance to wear kid cowboy boots, it would mean an awful lot for them. Sporting a pair of Harley Davidson boots just like the one their dads are wearing makes them feel closer to their fathers. It would also mean that they are also considered important and looked upon as grownups already.

As much as Harley Davidson are originally known to produce biker’s boots which are exclusively considered to be a man’s footwear, they have evolved and have come up with boots suited for everyone – men and women, young and old plus they got the cutest kid cowboy boots. The kids Haley Davidson boots comes in several designs that would certainly catch the attention of your kids as they match the designs worn by grownups. This means that they are not your usual children shoes but junior versions of grownup shoes. The kids Harley Davidson boots have designs that sport buckles, patches, and the like just like the adult versions of the HD Patches Boots, Full Throttle Boots, HD Harness Boots, and even the favorite HD Faded Glory design.

This footwear may be a biker’s boot but your kid does not have to wait to wear it only when he is being taken for a ride in his dad’s motorcycle as it would be great even while playing games. The kid cowboy boots from Harley Davidson would offer them the same protection as the grownup version of the cowboy boots. They offer the same features of durability, stability, comfort, and style. A pair would definitely give the protection and support that your kid’s feet, ankles, and legs need as they indulge in rough games. They can have the time of their life running around and jumping without you worrying about the possibility of a twisted ankle at just about every turn they make. They are also made with rubber soles that would provide more balance and grip to avoid mishaps while on rocky paths on slippery grounds.

It is important that you are aware of your kids’ preferences when you shop for your kid cowboy boots. It is even better if you bring them with you so that they themselves could see the different styles and choose a pair of the kids Harley Davidson boots that they like. It would be a good experience for them and would definitely give them a sense of maturity.

Giving them the opportunity to pick a pair of boots and instilling in them the responsibility that comes with the cowboy boots would also make them value having their footwear more.

As in buying children’s shoes, you need to also make sure that you are getting a half a size or even a size bigger as kids grow up fast. So do not be surprised when the kids Harley Davidson boots will outlast your kids’ rough handling of their footwear as they are built to survive the most extreme conditions. It would be a joy to watch as they have fun with their kid cowboy boots that you would already be planning for the next trip to the store even before they have outgrown their current pair.
